Review Timeless
Oh my goodness, "Timeless" was a fantastic ride! As a longtime Drizzt fan, I practically vibrated with excitement when I learned R.A. Salvatore was returning to the beloved dark elf. This isn't just another Drizzt adventure; it's a deep dive into his origins, exploring the relationship between Drizzt and his father, Zaknafein, a story I've been yearning to read for years. The way Salvatore weaves together the past and present is masterful; seeing Zaknafein navigating the cutthroat politics of Menzoberranzan while simultaneously following Drizzt's present-day challenges created a wonderfully rich tapestry.
The book beautifully tackles the complex father-son dynamic, showcasing the generational conflict between Zaknafein's ingrained prejudices and Drizzt's more open-minded worldview. It's a nuanced portrayal that explores themes of acceptance, prejudice, and the enduring power of familial bonds even when faced with seemingly insurmountable differences. Seeing these two powerful figures, each battling their inner demons as well as external threats, was incredibly compelling. The inclusion of Jarlaxle, ever the enigmatic and charming rogue, adds another layer of intrigue and humour, his presence a constant reminder of the enduring friendships forged in the face of danger.
Salvatore masterfully incorporates the familiar elements we love about the Drizzt series: breathtaking action sequences filled with the signature swashbuckling swordplay, cunning betrayals that keep you guessing, and a healthy dose of dark humour that somehow manages to lighten even the bleakest moments. The battles are epic, the stakes are high, and the danger feels palpable, much like the thrilling moments in the Hunter's Blades trilogy. There are moments where the action gets a little… Dragonball Z-esque, but honestly, that's part of the charm. It's pure, unadulterated fun.
While the book does assume a certain level of familiarity with the Forgotten Realms and its characters, it’s perfectly readable for newcomers willing to dive into the rich world-building. However, I would highly recommend starting at the beginning of the Drizzt saga to truly appreciate the full scope of his journey and the depth of the characters. That said, even those less familiar with the D&D universe will appreciate the exciting storyline and engaging characters.
The ending is a cliffhanger – a fantastic, heart-stopping, utterly brilliant cliffhanger that will leave you breathlessly anticipating the next installment. It’s the kind of ending that ignites the imagination and leaves you itching to find out what happens next. If you're a Drizzt fan, this book is a must-read. If you’re new to the series, prepare to be captivated by a richly detailed world and unforgettable characters. "Timeless" is a worthy addition to the legend of Drizzt Do'Urden, and I, for one, can't wait for the next chapter.
